Sjogrens Syndrome Often Never Diagnosed

Pronounced as "show-grens", several million people have this disease and often go undiagnosed with it. Symptoms include dry eyes, eye pain, dental problems, dry mouth, joint pain, and problems most anywhere in the body moisture producing glands are located - especially in women. Memory problems often accompany this syndrome. Nine out of ten patients have this syndrome are female. Very little is known about the exact cause of this illness.

When one reviews the constellation of symptoms in the chart above, it’s easy to see how many of these could be mistaken for something else by less meticulous doctors. Many doctors merely treat individual symptoms with their prescription pad, without looking at all the symptoms together for a common illness.

For example:

* Memory problems could be incorrectly diagnosed as early onset Altzheimer’s or other brain disease, causing undue panic in a patient and their family

* Problems absorbing food nutrients might be diagnosed as leaky gut syndrome or some other digestive disorder

* Upper respiratory problems might also be attributed to allergies, colds, virus infections or even asthma

* Joint pain might be completely attributed strictly to some form of arthritis

Symptoms for other diseases are possible - this is only a partial list.

All of these diagnostic mistakes could result in prescriptions for drugs given for illnesses which don’t exist - which of course results in no relief for the patient. It is also known that this disease can often go undiagnosed for many years.

One woman suffered from an unusually high number of dental cavities despite constant brushing and flossing. Later in her life Sjorgen’s Syndrome was diagnosed by an astute doctor. Her problem was caused by a lack of saliva production which not only helps to breakdown food, but also protects teeth. Unfortunately, her diagnosis didn’t come before she had ten cavities filled and her teeth overall were in bad condition.

This affliction can occur in concert with others such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Lupus, Systemic Sclerosis (scleroderma) and Polymyositis/Dermatomyositis.  To learn more about this illness, visit the foundation’s website at http://www.sjogrens.org

Research into this affliction is on-going.
